2014 Butterfly Workshop

On Aug 30th 2014, the WLCA Board hosted a Monarch Butterfly Workshop for kids around the lake.  Monarch butterflies have declined in recent years due to a decline in their food plant (Milkweed), so the point of the workshop was to raise awareness of the value of pollinators (bees, bats, hummingbirds, as well as butterflies) and to show kids how they could help the Monarch.

Part of a Disney documentary was shown (“Wings of Life”), then the kids made butterfly houses out of old milk cartons, and made pollinators out of egg cartons. Each child went home with a milkweed seedling and seeds to plant at home, and a butterfly guide was given out to each family.
